This vast lawn of woody plants known as the Arboretum, forms the bulk of the garden. The Arboretum largely hosts broadleaved trees of temperate climates which are distributed along the walking routes. Some of these plants are very ancient, authentic woody monuments, like the large specimens of Juglans cinerea, Quercus robur and Liquidambar styraciflua. Others are younger, but nevertheless display monumental shapes, such as the Sophora japonica ‘pendula’ commonly known as the Japanese pagoda tree.
