Visit the Museum of Palazzo Poggi to see an original document which testifies to a historical moment involving all the academic world.
On 18 September 1988, 384 university deans from all over the world gathered in Bologna to sign the Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum during a formal ceremony.
The Magna Charta was conceived by the University of Bologna on its 900th anniversary. It establishes the autonomy and freedom of the university, and endorses the values underpinning the authentic academic mission.
Today signed by 889 university deans, it has thus acquired a guiding role within the international academic community. Today, it claims that teaching and research can greatly contribute to cultural growth, beyond any geographical and political border.
